12v Cool Box

February 10th, 2010

Many mobile home owners often wish to install a small fridge into their caravan, camper van or mobile home, however sometimes these can work out to be rather expensive. A more cost effective way of keeping items cool is the 12v cool box.

The 12v cool box is ideal for those short caravan holidays especially where a 240v mains supply is lacking.

Most caravans come fitted as standard with a 12 volt battery. This is used to power the ancillary electrical items such as TV, microwave and more specifically the fridge. Though long term this option is not ideal, for the mobile home owner who travels little and often, the 12v cool box is the perfect solution.

The mobile home 12v battery can be charged either from the mains or from the vehicle alternator when not in use.

Not only can the 12v cool box be used within the caravan itself but if the user also owns a boat, it can also be used on those day long fishing trips providing the boat has a waterproof 12v supply. Most modern boats have the waterproof 12v battery fitted as standard, this ideal for keeping your lunch and dinner fresh, or maybe a nice cold beer to celebrate that big catch.

Description

Coolers are usually large and unwieldy, which is why Koolatron developed the Compact Kooler, specially designed to fit in the snug spaces behind the seats of many cars, trucks, and vans. Like many of Koolatron's coolers, this unit features a 12-volt cooling system that plugs into a car's cigarette lighter. The cooler's motor blows cold air over your food and beverages, keeping them 40 degrees F cooler than the outside temperature. The cooler also doubles as a warmer, if you'd rather keep the contents toasty. Outside of the car or truck, the cooler is still versatile, with a swinging, foldaway handle for easy portage and a latchless lid that opens with one hand. Other handy features include a convenient cord wrap and a unique storage spot for the unplugged cigarette lighter. Despite the unit's compact size and weight (only 9 pounds), it can still hold up to 23 12-ounce soft drinks. --Rivers Janssen

Great Product

Purchased this cooler two years ago and have been very pleased. Have taken it on auto trips and on the train. Be sure to buy the AC/DC adapter. It is well worth the money.

Quite Pleased

by Stuart Ferguson from on 2010-06-22
I am a recently diagnosed Type II diabetic and am trying to behave myself in regards to eating - something rather difficult to do on a long road trip. I purchased the Koolatron 18 Quart in the interest of hauling with me yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit and other things people should not have to eat. I have found that this little rig works like a charm, keeping everything very cool. It is relatively quiet, too. The 18 quart version is rather modest sized, i.e., you can't keep a weeks worth of groceries in it, but large enough to store the things I need for a couple of days at a time. My one complaint, as stated in another review, is the A/C adaptor is not included. If one leaves the cooler running off the car battery all night, the battery is dead in the morning. Thus, one must plug it into an A/C outlet overnight. So know that you will need to spend another $35 on an A/C adaptor to have a complete system that works well.

Great, until it stops working

by H. Moore from on 2010-04-29
We bought this for our family road trips. We got to use it TWICE! The two times we used it, it was great and kept everything inside cool. The third time we went to use it, it was completely dead. We bought all the recommended adaptors and followed the instructions that came with it. Though it worked great two times, it's definately too expensive to only use twice then have to trash. We were very disappointed and are still looking for a good RELIABLE cooler.

Test run

by Grandma from Salt Lake City, UT on 2010-04-20
Item arrived in good time. Planning 3000 mi. trip. Will be put to the test. Have used it as recommended in instructions and worked fine. Fan very quiet, nice fit behind seat, filled with 24 cans of pop that had been refriged and they stayed cold after 2hr. drive, and still cold in morning after sitting overnight with power off. I give this cooler a A+ on function, have not tried the heat mode yet, maybe next winter.

Koolatron Compact Kooler

Koolatron Compact KoolerI ordered a new Koolatron Compact Kooler but received a factory rebuilt instead. Amazon adjusted the price but the cooler would not work. I attempted to contact Koolatron via telephone and email without success. I finally repaired the cooler myself and it now works fine. The warranty is worthless!

Great Car Cooler & Warmer

by Chon N. from Seattle, WA on 2009-06-29
Used this on my road trip, it did great keeping all my food and drinks cold. Even when driving through the hot desert of 90 degree weather, it did cool down below 40 degrees from outside temperature, so it was 50 degrees inside cooler for our food. Warmer does great, can use up to 4 hrs maximum. Either cooler or warmer, plug into 12v lighter when car is running or will drain your car battery. It stays cool when at picnic and cannot plug cooler in. Only concern is when fans running, its loud inside the car. When driving the road noise blends it out. After awhile you don't even think about it. Not too bulky in the backseat. Easily used seat belts to help hold it down when driving, such as around corners. Greatly recommend this cooler/warmer. My friend had a different brand and didn't work well. This one is a great portable fridge. Plus bought adapter from Amazon.com to use at hotel rooms, plug right in to wall outlet.

Great little cooler

by Alvino from on 2007-08-05
This is the second P-65 Koolatron Kargo cooler we have owned and we have been very pleased with the cooler. We use it in our Class B RV and use it on DC power when traveling and use the adapter when parked and plugged into AC. It keeps the temperature as advertised.

Cool but not cold.

by Zoran Kahric from Maryland United States on 2006-11-07
It can be used to keep your beer cold for few hours but it will not make it cold. If you put warm beer in it will not make it nice and cold in few hours. Good for people who don't want to buy ice and have hassle with water all over your car, but it's not as good as I would like. It will not kill your car battery in few hours (at least not on my BMW X3), but I wouldn't try overnight.

As good as a thermoelectric cooler can be

by Outdoor Enthusiast from Rocky Mtns, Ut on 2009-09-09
I've had my Kool Kaddy for a couple of years now. I've always wanted an iceless cooler. I basically like it, but there are a couple of things you need to be aware of. I also have an Engel MT45 fridge and an Igloo marine cooler. They all have their place and I like them all. The Engel definitely outperforms them all but its $$$. Thus why a thermoelectric cooler can be a good choice. The issues are price, weight, temperature control and efficiency (current draw). Refrigeration style (Engel) is way more efficient and has temperature set point but also way more costly and heavier. The thermoelectric coolers cool down an amount from the ambient....typically 35 to 40 degrees F. So if you're traveling in your air-conditioned car you should get down to 40 degrees or so. Just keep it out of the sun. They do take a couple of hours to get there depending on how cool your food was when you put it in. I have the AC-DC converter so I plug mine in at home while I'm packing to pre cool it. The biggest issue with the thermoelectric cooler is the current draw....typically 3.2 amps @12V. If your traveling, then this type of cooler works great and 3.2 amps is no big deal for your alternator. And if staying in motels, you just take your cooler inside with your 12v adapter. If you are camping where the car isn't going to be driven, then you shouldn't leave it plugged in for more than overnight as you'll chance draining your car battery the next time you go to start the car. Sometimes I take a milk jug frozen with water to supplement the cooler for times when I have to leave it off when car isn't being driven. I also take jumper cables as I've left it on too long and the car wouldn't start and had to beg for a jump. Just beware of amp-hours being consumed when car engine is off. The real pluses are that its a fairly light cooler (similar to regular ice coolers) and you don't have to feed it with ice all the time and you don't have water sloshing around in the bottom. It's also a fairly inexpensive cooler. The cons are that its somewhat power hungry as thermoelectric technology isn't the most efficient. Also you have limited control with what temperature its at.....but so is the same problem when using ice. I have a thermometer in mine and so can periodically monitor the temperature. I think these thermoelectric coolers do a pretty good job. I've found the cooler works best if not 100% filled to the point that the fan area is somewhat blocked.

Not so Kool

by Grunt from Novato, CA USA on 2009-08-21
Like another reviewer my Koolatron with specified AC adaptor died after one night while pre-cooling beverages on AC current. I tried to see if it would run on one of my two Honda CRV DC accessory plugs but the cheaply made cooling fan was flat dead. Turned this baby into an expensive ice chest! The good news is I bought it thru Amazon and the return was practically hassle -free. I had thrown out the flimsy box it was shipped in and had to purchase one for the return. I will probably try another Koolatron model as I think the majority of reviewers had good experiences and the appealing concept of shedding melting ice cubes and blocks while on the road is worth another try. Hopefully, it is not the hot running ozone smelling converter (See other reviews) toasting the fan or I am off to the Post Office again.

Disappointing Product

by R. Buckley from Trabuco Canyon, CA USA on 2009-08-01
I was looking forward to using this on our camping vacation since the sites have electrical outlets. I added the AC converter to the order and tested the unit overnight when it arrived and it worked fine. Then, on the overnight cool down before leaving on vacation, it quit. No fan, no cooling, no heating, nothing. Tried it with the AC converter and then plugged into the 12V supply in the SUV, no luck. I write tech manuals for a living so I actually read them and I had followed all the instructions to the letter. The 2 page manual doesn't suggest any remedy so I will contact mfg for replacement.

Koolatron Kool Kaddy

by W. Wilson from Covina, California on 2008-12-28
I used this for the first time Christmas day and it kept everything as cold as my refrigerator. I plugged it into a wall outlet the night before and the temp got down to 34 degrees empty so when I loaded it up the next morning and drove for 3 hours everything was as cold as it was when I filled it.

Little Delight

by Kenneth Fretz from Sterling Heights, MI USA on 2008-07-02
This product worked very well. For its price it is well build and reliable. Amazon performed its normal two day deliver and we were on our way. We used it for an auto trip and it provided continuous cooling without out any hassle. With its 40 degree cooling differential, we found that during our travels in New England in May we were able to keep items frozen in the bottom to bring home the following week.
